One thing I have found, though, is that there is a lot of consistency between dialects, so that you can pretty much sound like an Aussie by substituting die for day, and so on. What that means is that we could get a rational spelling -- just each dialect would interpret it according to their own practice! Even the words that are pronounced quite differently often differ only by a letter, which isn't too difficult to get used to. I gave it a try: http://www.ship.edu/~cgboeree/ess.html.
